Prenatal Lung Development
نویسنده
چکیده
Lung development requires integration of multiple regulatory factors that mediate patterns of cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, and death. These developmental programs, which include transcription factors and signaling molecules, are likely re-enlisted during recovery of the lung following injury. Understanding these processes could provide important insight into controlling cell differentiation and regeneration for therapeutic purposes. This chapter describes the morphological features that characterize the defined stages of lung development and also addresses epithelial cell differentiation and vasculogenesis of the airways. In the latter part of the chapter, an attempt will be made to highlight specific cellular and molecular events during development that may influence lung maintenance in adult disease states.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia and neonatal lung lesions.
Increasingly, the diagnoses of chest lesions in infants are made not by symptoms of respiratory distress but by prenatal imaging. Because the availability and quality of prenatal imaging have increased, so has the frequency of prenatal diagnoses that include symptomatic and asymptomatic lesions. Early prenatal diagnosis of life-threatening lesions, such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) ...
متن کاملAirway smooth muscle: an architect of the lung?
This review examines the rationale for increased study of the prenatal development of airway smooth muscle (ASM). With a critical role in asthma and airway remodelling, ASM has been extensively investigated. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of studies looking at prenatal ASM development and function. A working party report from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute identified this issue a...
متن کاملCan the preterm lung recover from perinatal stress?
After birth, adequate lung function is necessary for the successful adaptation of a preterm baby. Both prenatal and postnatal insults and therapeutic interventions have an immediate effect on lung function and gas exchange but also interfere with fetal and neonatal lung development. Prenatal insults like chorioamnionitis and prenatal interventions like maternal glucocorticosteroids interact but...
متن کاملInfluence of prenatal hypoxia and postnatal hyperoxia on morphologic lung maturation in mice
BACKGROUND Oxygen supply as a lifesaving intervention is frequently used to treat preterm infants suffering additionally from possible prenatal or perinatal pathogen features. The impact of oxygen and/or physical lung injury may influence the morphological lung development, leading to a chronic postnatal lung disease called bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). At present different experimental BPD...
متن کاملTranscriptome Analysis in Prenatal IGF1-Deficient Mice Identifies Molecular Pathways and Target Genes Involved in Distal Lung Differentiation
BACKGROUND Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF1) is a multifunctional regulator of somatic growth and development throughout evolution. IGF1 signaling through IGF type 1 receptor (IGF1R) controls cell proliferation, survival and differentiation in multiple cell types. IGF1 deficiency in mice disrupts lung morphogenesis, causing altered prenatal pulmonary alveologenesis. Nevertheless, little is kn...
متن کامل[Cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung. Importance of prenatal diagnosis].
Cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung is a rare malformation of the lung airway which often performed diagnosed in the prenatal period by ultrasound. Ultrasound monitoring should be performed during pregnancy to assess lung development. We report the case of a 4-year-old patient with prenatal diagnosis of cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung, not confirmed by chest radiograph at bi...
